Racing Tips

Sailing Downwind in Big Breeze
  • First Buy an Acme tiller then...
  • Get the vang off a few inches before the ww mark, but the leach should be only loose enough to dump the breeze in a shot, it should be hooked in less than 5 degrees in normal downwind conditions.
  • Leave the outhaul on, unless you had to kill it upwind, if so, then buy a new sail.
  • Take a little cunningham off, but don't let it all go.
  • Make your hiking strap adjustable and pull it drum tight so you can hook your windward calve under it, and be one with the boat.
  • Put the centerboard down all the way if necessary, but preferably in small increments to add stability (you will need to lift it up when you jibe so you don't "trip" over it.
  • Weight back only enough so you don't stick bow in a wave, fill, and spin out.
  • Steer with your hand as close to the tiller (6 inches) as needed, then.......DO ALL THIS BEFORE THE RACE SO THAT YOU KNOW WHERE SAIL SETTINGS ARE BEFORE YOU ROUND THE WINDWARD MARK then.....
  • Trim the sail in from 90 degrees to 80 or even closer in big shots.
  • Look back for the shots.
