Fourteen sailors came out to celebrate the Heckl Memorial Regatta this past
Saturday. As predicted, the weather in the morning was: rainy, cold and little wind.
Also as predicted, the wind shifted to the NW and built to a stead 17 with gusts
topping 23 mph and warmed to a toasty 51 degrees. The competitors didn't seem
to mind a bit. Josh Garber started off the season with a bullet in the first race
beating Bruce Martinson by about 1/2 boat length. The wind strength built between
races and for the next 4 races it seemed that success was dependant upon
boat handing and hiking stamina; the top three of Martinson, Dunsworth, and Bowers
never fell out of the top three spots for the remainder of the event. Harris and Holtze
got to know each other pretty well over the final few races while the next five sailors
had bright moments but were plagued by inconsistency. I think every sailor dumped
at least once in this event. Bowers even admitted to a chicken gybe to pass 4 or 5
boats at a leeward mark yard sale. For those at the back of the fleet that finished
all the races, the time will soon come that you are trading tacks with the top boats
if you stick with it. Yesterday was a demanding day out on the water and anyone
that completed all the races should feel good about the time they spent in the boat.
A hearty congratulations goes out to Bruce Martinson as the two-time Heckl
Memorial Regatta Champ!
D21's next event will be held at Bald Eagle YC in White Bear Lake on June 11/12.
See the D21 website for further details on fleet racing (three nights a week!!) and
upcoming events.
Thanks to Louie Newell for running the RC, Kristin Digiulio for scoring, Andy Heckl
for hosting the party and organizing the event. Also, thanks to David Keane and
Mr. Potts for running two mark-set boats; the events are much better with you
there. Finally, many thanks to WBYC for supporting this event.
