The Laser District 21 Grand Prix Regatta was held in Lake Okoboji, Iowa, on September 24 and 25, 2005. Thirty-one sailors from Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas competed. The Okoboji Yacht Club hosted the event. Unfortunately, the sailors spent most of Saturday inside the clubhouse due to inclimate weather. Finally, around 4:30 p.m., the Race Committee, headed by P.R.O. Phil Petersen, sent the fleet out for three races. The winds were from the East/Northeast at 5-7. At the end of Saturday’s racing, the fleet sailed back to the club in near-darkness.

On Sunday morning, the sailors awoke to more rain and thunderstorms. But the strong contingent from the Twin Cities prevailed on the rest of the fleet to try and race. The Race Committee ran two back-to-back races in the pouring rain (but no thunder). The wind was from the South/Southeast at 5-7. Sailors hoping for five races and a throw-out were not disappointed.

In the end, Kurt Holtze of Minneapolis threw out a fifth and won the Regatta in dominating fashion. Lars Hansen and Bruce Martinson, both from Minneapolis, finished second and third. The top woman, former Laser North American Champion Susan Pagel, finished fourth. The top Junior was Erik Bowers from Minneapolis. The furthest travel award went to Jack Mauel of Houston, whose family had evacuated to Lake Okoboji in advance of Hurricane Rita.

Hats off to the Okoboji Yacht Club and Phil Petersen for finding a way to run five races in challenging conditions. Complete results see above.
